Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate drinking rate and drinking related characteristics of middle school students. Also, to analyze the factors that affect drinking of middle schoolers. Method: Students from 15 different middles schools located in the S district of Seoul were investigated using a self answering questionnaire. A total of 1,957 students, two classes of 7 grade and 8 graders from each school, answered the questionnaire during the time period of November 8 to 19, 2002. The tool used for the research was a modified version of what Korean Association Against Drug Abuse and Korean Drinking Culture and Alcohol Research have developed, and Cronbach¢¥s a was 0.87. The data collected were analyzed using Spss Win 10.0 by applying logistic regression model and X-square. Results: 1. 64.1% had drinking experience and 23.1% replied that they are presently still drinking. 2. The rate of students who have experienced smoking was 9.6% and present smoking rate was 10.1%. 34% have experienced their fathers¢¥ drunken rowdiness and 6.5% of them their mothers¢¥. 3. Students whose parents tend to drink more often, who have experienced their parents¢¥ drunken misconduct, who think that their school life is boring or students who have friends that drink often had a higher tendency to continue drinking. 4. The rate of middle schooler¢¥s problem drinking measured by a subscale of POSIT was 5.5% among total subjects, and 8.5% among experienced drinkers. 5. Relating factors of problem drinking was female, score, content of school life, number of friends who drinking, parents¢¥ drinking rate. 6. Major factors that affect drinking behavior of middle school students were experience of smoking, whether their friends drink or not, experience of their mothers¢¥ drunken rowdiness, satisfaction of school life and amount of pocket per month. Students who have smoking experience are 1.986 times more like to drink compared to the students whp don¢¥t smoke and having a ,friend who drinks increases the chance of drinking by 1.805 times. Also experiencing their mothers¢¥ drunken misconduct increases the chance of drinking by 1.525. Conclusions: Sixty-four percents of middle schoolers have drinking experience and 23 % of them still drink on regular basis. Smoking, friends that drink and mothers misconduct under the influence of alcohol were factorc that have effect on present drinking rate. Therefore, to prevent drinking of teenagers other various factors should be looked into for a more effective alcohol prevention methods.
